Farm to School
Farm to School programing connects preschool to third grade students to healthy, local food through hands on learning. Students plant, maintain and harvest produce in the Youth Garden that goes directly into the school cafeteria.
Other lessons include Harvest of the Month, highlighting a seasonal food locally grown in Montana, programing focusing on making good food choices to fuel growing bodies and brains, and utilizing Montana-specific crops that incorporate history, landscape and economy.
Where are we?
In the Schools - Temporarily Paused
Students engage in learning through hands-on classroom activities about healthy lifestyle choices and Montana agriculture. MSU's Harvest of the Month program provides students with unique opportunities to learn about and taste locally produced Montana foods.
At the Youth Garden
The Red Lodge/Carbon County Youth Garden allows area youth the opportunity to experience school subjects in real-world settings. Using math, science, and reading students experience the process of gardening from seed planting to harvest. Harvested produce is then used in the school cafeteria and Boys and Girls Club for daily menu items.
At the Club
Kids engage with Harvest of the Month food items through our Kids In the Kitchen cooking program, and have an opportunity to taste locally sourced food. We take trips to the garden, to help with weeding, planting and decorating, and usually come across a tasty fruit or veggie to try!
